Camel comes from Bologna, Italy and showed us that italian dj’s don’t have to sound like “gigi d’agostino”. After his gig at IZZE KAZZE, I had the chance to speak to him. Here’s the match.
et voilà: Where does your influence come from?
Camel: I grew up listening to 90’s hip hop and funk, though. I enjoyed Chicago oldschool house , dub, & jazz. Miles Davis is my hero!
et voilà: How long have you been producing and DJ’ing?
Camel: So many years! I have to say that my real start has been as acid jazz and hip hop dj, back in the past, when hip hop was real! I have the luck to have met people that have liked my sound and supported me giving me the chance to join their roster in huges event with crowds of 1k to 2k people. After few years I have started to mix my passion for the “funk” with some electronic sounds experimenting what you might remember as downbeat, or “trip hop” as it was more commonly called, from ninja tune and mowax and the first “bigbeat”. Soon after starting to produce my first beat with an atari st and cubase, i became the resident Dj of one of the most respected club in the italian scene, the LINK in Bologna, where I used to play D&B and jungle, it wasn’t too long before i fell in love with the breakbeat and produced records with Mantra ….everything else is history in the making!
et voilà: The name CAMEL, a good product placement by the cigarette industry? ;)
Camel: A tribute;)
et voilà: Has DJ’ing always been your first choice, or do you have an alternative plan B?
Camel: Always have a prepared plan “B” for an unexpected disappointment. Signed me!
et voilà: Have you ever played in Germany before?
Camel: Yes, six months ago!
et voilà: Do you think there are any differences between a German and for example an Italian party crowd?
Camel: Every country has its own culture and unique club scene. German Vs Italy 3-3. Love both! You know what I’m talking about!
et voilà: I read on twitter “Today was a productive day for me! Can’t wait to test the new tracks this weekend!” – After the show: Did you test new tracks here in Dortmund? Did they work?
Camel: Yes, I tested 2 new unrealeased tracks coming in the next months and the remixes of my Jellyjazz Ep!.
et voilà: You remixed the track “In nightclub” by Malente & Dex. How did you get in contact with them? (Malente plays next month @ IZZE KAZZE, too.)
Camel: Shir Khan, the label boss of Exploited (one of my favourite labels) contact me via mail. I loved that track from the first moment I heard!
et voilà: What can we expect in the future?
Camel: My new Ep is out in this days with amazing remix. “Flush”a project with Nt89 is out in the Dr. Gonzo Album (Crookers & Savage Skulls) on Southern Fried in the next months. as well as another couple of remixes for some friends and my upcoming EP!
